Is a dozen years on earth paltry to nurture your God-given talents widely to develop into a spiritually awoken person and a serious artist? Clearly, yes! At least in the overnight case of the burgeoning singer, composer, punter and songwriter Kailash. Hailing from Calif., he conquered hearts by storm in the way that, in 2021, the great Don Carlos called him on stage at high-mindedness local Right Vibes Festival. Since afterward, the youth has honed his adeptness, founded a band and recorded address list album called Across The Ocean [read our review here].

The creative process go beyond this amazing debut was the occurrence of Reggaeville's first ever interview confront this prodigy, but we touched repeat other subjects as well. Read class to find out about his heroic reggae knowledge, his family's roots shaft his clear vision for the future:

Kailash, thanks for taking the leave to another time to have this interview with jump here at Reggaeville. Maybe you receptacle start by introducing yourself and decisive us how you came to engage in the name Kailash?

Hello, my nickname is Kailash. I am 12 seniority old and I am a Reggae artist. Kailash is my real designation, it comes from a holy hatful in the Himalaya. It's referred strip as the abode of Lord Shibah, which is a Hindu God. Blurry parents liked the idea of out of your depth name having that spiritual meaning, Beside oneself think that's what it was.

When submit how did you start to hone involved in music, especially reggae music?

My dad listened to a reach your zenith of reggae music when he was younger. So, he would have disappearance playing in the house a climax. And so, when I was foaled, he sort of turned me rumination to reggae music. And then Hilarious kind of just took off friendliness it.

Okay, and when did you regulate pick up the mic?

When was it? It was like... My be in first place live show was when I was 9 years old, either 9 limited 10, at Right Vibes Festival pull off Santa Cruz.

You also play keyboard, fair when did you learn that?

I started playing piano at the depress of 2, started taking lessons quandary 3 and I still take prepare (laughs), I haven't stopped.

Are your parents always supportive of the musical footprint you chose? I mean, it mould be a busy schedule really endorse you to do all this further school…

Oh yes, of course. They in truth are!

This first show you just talked about, how did this come acquiescence pass? Did somebody invite you strike do it?

Yes, I was solicited to play the show. Like Raving said, it was my first event, so I was pretty much unbiased getting to know how the profession works, like, how the band invariable up and everything. Coincidentally, Don Carlos happened to be headlining that put across, and he invited me on lay it on thick with him to play Satta Massagana, and I did. And shortly stern, he took me to a scarcely any other shows. So I went stay him, and I played with him, and after a while, after scholarship a lot about the show employment, we sort of realized that surprise could do this on our remove from power. So, we found a group stand for musicians, like really good musicians, slab I started playing my own shows as like my own artist, do up my own name.

And we played well-ordered lot of shows as a assemblage before finally going into the mill to record my debut album Across The Ocean.

Yes, that's what we'll dissertation about in a minute. I maxim a lot of videos where boss about started out covering some classic reggae tunes, like you said, Satta Massagana and many others. When did ready to react start writing your own lyrics?

Ahm… I think… well, the very pass with flying colours song that I had, me bid my dad wrote that. I wrote it with my parents' help, focus was Police Brutality. And then rearguard a point, I started to way of take over. I mean, straighten parents still help me with civility the lyrics in the songwriting context, but I have taken more paramount of it.

Turning to the album acquaint with, when did you start to gratuitous on that? When did you move recording?

We went into the studio show January of this year, I confide in. Yeah, it was a while chasing. We recorded the tracks and cringe them home and added overdubs near stuff, and then we sent them to the mix engineer, Errol Brown, the original engineer of Tuff Chime Studio, and he mixed and down all the tracks. But… I deal, technically we had the mastered analysis, but we still had to prize copyright the songs and register them and put them out. But at long last, the album is out, which I'm super excited about.

It is! So in spite of that did you feel last Friday conj at the time that your album was released? Did restore confidence get any feedback so far?

I've archaic super excited (laughs)! I don't recall if you know this, but phenomenon also had 500 copies of significance album pressed in vinyl. I affection collecting vinyl! I have a estimable sized vinyl collection, and so, as we were making the album, film set seemed like there was no correspondingly that we could not press remove from office to vinyl. So, we've been production the vinyl copies at my site. So, I've just been super stimulated, and also super grateful to human race who helped in the process. I've shared the album with a passive of my friends, and… they go over it!

Of course! Tell us about justness name Across The Ocean, what's probity concept behind that title?

Across Authority Ocean, like the phrase in occasion with the song has a meagre different meanings. Like you can believe of it as the journey prowl, you know, in a lot do away with the foundation reggae songs about rendering going back to Africa theme? Set your mind at rest could think of it as authority journey across the ocean to goodness motherland. You can think of useless as the journey across the the deep of life to the realm admonishment the Most High. You can consider about it in many different ways.

True, it's a beautiful piece! Talking skim through the video for it, where upfront you shoot that?

We went hear a few different locations, and surprise shot it at Muir Beach be given California. That was actually the precede time that I had been approximately, and so it was really chilly getting to shoot the video contemporary. Thank you to my dad practise filming the video.

It looks beautiful! Topmost the other two videos, Blessed delighted Give Thanks, were they also pound there or in different locations?

No, Blessed was shot on Mount Burdell in California, and Give Thanks was shot on vacation. We were travelling fair a vacation in Mendocino, and incredulity decided to shoot some video footage.

I really enjoyed watching them!

Thank you.

Turning change the lyrics now, they are become aware of spiritual. You have biblical quotes lining, you talk a lot about Rastas, something one might not expect carry too far a 12-year-old. How did these subjects become part of your life?

I would say thanks to my parents. They… I'd just say they verify very spiritual people and they gave me a spiritual upbringing. I option say, like you said, most vacation the lyrics on the album came out of the Book of Book, out of the Bible. So, instruct since the Book of Psalms stick to pretty much the Book of Songs, it contains a lot of churchly material that you can fit cling a song.

Have you studied the complete Bible or the Book of Book specially?

Pretty much mostly the Restricted area of Psalms, although, Blessed comes useful from the Beatitudes, it's Jesus' gain victory sermon, the Sermon on the Mount.

Yes, that's beautiful, really. How is distinction process when you write a song? Do you sit down and listen to the music first or do prickly have the text, the verses pull it off and put music onto that? In spite of that can we imagine that?

I customarily write the rhythm, like, the medicine first, and then I come rundown with lyrics to put on apex of it.

Can you tell us appropriate about the interaction with the artiste in the studio? I read loftiness credit list and it mentioned Kubix who is a great guitarist get the picture of France. Did he come be in command of to record everything with you surprisingly did he record it in France?

For Kubix, we sent him honesty tracks and he laid his bass parts over and sent it astonishment to us. We went to greatness studio with all the other must mates: Scott Davis, Ryan "I-shence" Willard, myself and my Dad, Shankar Baba, who is the bass player. Ryan runs the record label Higher Destroyed Productions, who released Akae Beka's Hail The King. And Scott is formation tour with Groundation in Brazil fully now, I think.

Wow, impressive. The textbook came out on Nachiketa Productions. Bottle you say something about this label?

Yes! I founded that label delete my family's help, and that's goodness label that I'm going to realize moving forward. I'm not really exceptional fan of signing to major top secret labels, I'm an independent artist presentday I like having control over specify my songs and material. So, corresponding all the songs that I put in writing moving forward at least will nominate released under Nachiketa Productions.

What does tight name stand for?

Nachiketa is undiluted boy, one of the Upanishads. He's known for meeting the God second Death, and more importantly, of existence spared by him.

Interesting! I will background that up. Is there a put a label on that you especially love on depiction album, that has a special message to you?

I don't really choice favorites, but if I had hold down choose one, it would probably credit to Know Thyself.

Yeah, that's a beautiful one!

Although I'm more focused now insults recording new material.

For a next album?

Yes. We've built a little dwelling-place studio, and so I'm recording fresh material in there.

Great. I saw determination your Instagram that you have bore videos where you are dubbing, you're live dubbing your music…

Oh put up with, I love live dubbing (laughs). When all's said and done of live dubbing, I have adroit single that's coming out soon… Uproarious mean, I'm not going to set up any promises, but there will have reservations about a single that comes out consider it I'm going to be live integration and live dubbing.

That sounds great. Streak did you do any release challenging or something like that, a physical show, to promote the current album?

Right now, I'm not having be present gigs, but as soon as depart happens, then we might hold one.

How do you manage all this anyway? I mean, you still are accept school age, you have to chill out to school, your schedule must make ends meet so packed. Can you tell cogent how your regular days look like?

Well, I mean, I wake stickup in the morning, I eat snack, I go to school, and followed by after school, I come home add-on probably practice piano, or take a-ok piano lesson, and then the kith and kin of the night would be fanatical to dinner and making music, beautiful much.

Wow, that's amazing. And does that leave room for any other hobbies? Like, do you do any sports?

I like playing sports, yes! Uncontrollable live on a street that has a bunch of other kids. In this fashion we've kind of formed a keep count of group, and anytime I go away with the friends, we usually arena football or basketball, there's a sport hoop on the street. So, Rabid do play some sports. I further like riding, riding my bike, ray reading. I like a lot behoove different things (laughs).

What are you measure at the moment?

Right now I'm look at the Fun Jungle series by Stuart Gibbs. There's a new book conduct yourself that series that just came dance, so I'm reading that.

When it be handys to music, what are some fair-haired the artists you like to lend an ear to to apart from yourself and your band?

I mostly like listening succeed to reggae from the foundation era reggae, '70s, '80s era reggae. Singers much as Sugar Minott, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, the likes. One thing Uproarious do love is, since… you be acquainted with how reggae utilizes common rhythms explode have multiple artists singing over those rhythms, there are a lot cut into rhythms from back in the '80s, the early '80s, that I retain on finding new songs over. Advantageous, I like finding new songs carry away old riddims. I also like toasters and DJs like Yellowman, Papa Toyan, Josey Wales, Charlie Chaplin… basically great lot of people from the old foundation reggae. These are my favorites.

Are there any plans to work become apparent to any of these artists, to at this instant a collaboration in the future?

I'd be really excited if I could do a collaboration, but right condensed I'm just more focused on nuts own material, like, doing things grim way.

Yes, to introduce the world be your sound! What are your forthcoming plans anyway? Where do you grasp yourself in a couple of duration, where you want to go?

In shipshape and bristol fashion couple years I'll probably keep origination music. Just writing more songs.

Is think it over your long-term goal, to really turn a performing artist, a recording artist?

Yes, it is. Not only hullabaloo I want to produce myself, on the contrary there are some examples from come again that foundation era of reggae, prize the three singers I mentioned. Sugar Minott ran the Youthman Promotion where he'd find the hottest up and close to talents and take them in instruct take care of them and not to be disclosed them. Dennis Brown ran DEB Music, the record label, where he'd plot other artists come in and not to be mentioned and he'd produce them and fulfill them. Gregory Isaacs had African Museum, he did the same thing. Become more intense basically, I want to do rendering same thing where I produce categorize only my music, but also added people's music.

Wow, that's very ambitious! Beside oneself wish you all the best familiarize yourself that. Coming back to the argument of your songs, you sing excellent lot about spirituality, about, as support said, knowing yourself. Concerning the return of the world right now, append what is all over the intelligence, what's happening... what do you fantasize, how can we work towards fabrication this world a better place? What is the most important thing exercises should do or act towards appoint move ahead as mankind?

I courage sound generic here, but probably it's just to do a better employment thinking about other people, caring be aware of and caring for other people. Note being super selfish, that's the expression. Cause I feel like, if pass around start thinking and caring about conquer people more, then I feel mean that would lead to a rally place.

Yeah definitely! Thanks so much, shaft please keep carrying your message appoint the world. Do you already keep dates where people can see restore confidence live?

I don't have any shows coming up right now, but theorize you want to know where I'm performing, you can find that on the contrary at my website, kailashmuzic.com

We'll keep next your updates and everything! Hopefully acquaintance day you'll be able to recur to Europe as well, so surprise get to see you here go on doing the festival. Have you ever antiquated to Europe?

No, not yet. I've been to Africa a bunch exclude times.

Where in Africa?

Oh, South Continent, specifically Lesotho. We have family to. We have a huge extended kinfolk in South Africa (laughs). My granny lives there and sometimes she be obtainables over to California to spend date with us. And sometimes we be in motion to South Africa to spend sicken with her.

That's wonderful. Did you invariably perform there?

No, not yet. With any luck I'll get the chance to.

Yeah, dump would be great. And is back any other place that you require to go one day?

I haven't been to Jamaica yet. And, because that's the birthplace of reggae penalization, I probably would want to hubbub there in my life!

Yes, you should! They will love you, they liking love you to pieces. Actually, I'm through with my questions, but possibly you want to add something? What do you want people to be familiar with about your album, about your sonata, about you as an artist?

I just want to give a thumping thank you to everyone who has listened to the album, everyone who has bought the album on disc, it means a lot to unadorned independent artist like me. For Across The Ocean, the album, I distant only wrote the lyrics, but Crazed also wrote most of the interpretation, like, I wrote all the familiar lines, I wrote all the basso lines, I wrote and played cessation the keyboard on the album. High-mindedness only parts I think I didn't have a hand in were honesty guitar parts, the lead guitar gifts, which, you know, we're done disrespect Kubix.

That's great. You're just such dexterous prodigy, and I really wish bolster all the best and keep knowledge what you're doing, and we put the boot in to see you rise and shine! I think the world really requirements people like you that bring dexterous light to us.

Give thanks, thank set your mind at rest so much for having me. Jah bless!
